Overdirecting is a styling technique to create extra body, volume and height. Position the cylinder side toward your scalp. Hold the rotating cylinder against a section of hair, pushing in the opposite direction of where the section of hair is to fall, hold for 3-5 seconds. Then slowly glide the InStyler®, still pushing in the opposite direction, maintaining tension and keeping the hair tight against the cylinder, through the entire section of hair to the tips.
The key to getting amazing fullness, lift and volume with your InStyler on fine or thin hair is an easy technique called "overdirection!" Use the InStyler® at the root with the cylinder toward your scalp, then push slightly toward the center of your head. Maintain the tension as you slowly move to the tips. For maximum height, focus the overdirection at the root. Thin hair is also greatly helped by using the Firm-Up Spray to further set the body and style created with the InStyler.

For best results smoothing curly, thick or coarse hair at the roots, take a 1/2 inch thick section of hair no wider than the brush head, and hold it tightly with your free hand straight out from the scalp. Close the InStyler to start rotation, then slowly stroke the section using the heated rotating barrel, starting at the root, on out to a few inches. Do this on both the top of the roots and under the roots until the roots are smooth. Then place that section of hair in the InStyler, release your hand holding the section of hair, and slowly draw the InStyler down through the hair to the tips to smooth and style the entire section.
Take your time. It is worth it. Doing this root smoothing properly before styling will help create a complete finished style, from the roots to the ends that can't be done with any other single styling tool - only the InStyler.
Working with extensions in your hair. Yes, you can use the InStyler on extensions providing they are human hair. Do not use the InStyler on plastic or synthetic hair. On Joanne, Dean starts at the middle of the hair and overdirects the InStyler down for a nice bob style. Next, he starts higher up and gives more tension to the hair. Combs through, to build that perfect bob!
For bangs, use the InStyler Rotating Iron at the root, with the cylinder placed on the underside of the bangs and close. Glide the Instyler slightly up and back, overdirecting toward the center of your head. Maintain tension as you move toward the tips. Hold until you've reached the desired results. Feel free to hold it longer for a more dramatic effect, you won't damage your hair.
Emerald has thick coarse hair. Make sure to comb through the hair and take a small section and with the barrel up. Close to start the InStyler barrel and let it rotate itself down the hair and at the bottom overdirect the InStyler for the perfect flip out! Next, is a soft curl. Take a small section, curl the hair around the InStyler, close it and rotate about 8-10 seconds for a perfect soft curl!
